Sourdough & Chowder: A San Francisco Classic

Friday, August 8, 2025 | 6:00PM - 8:30PM

$179.00 Per Station (Suitable for Dynamic Duos, please see below for details)

Join California native and San Francisco-trained chef Shayna Ozer for a hands-on evening celebrating one of the city’s most beloved culinary traditions: clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls.

A graduate of the California Culinary Academy, Chef Shayna brings personal experience and deep local roots to this nostalgic, flavor-packed class. This iconic pairing—made famous by Boudin Bakery at Fisherman’s Wharf—has delighted locals and visitors alike for generations, and now you’ll learn to make it from scratch at home.

🥖 What You’ll Learn:

Part 1: Sourdough from Start to Finish
Begin by learning how to work with a living sourdough starter, including how to feed, maintain, and store it. Then we’ll make dough, shape and proof it, and bake beautiful mini sourdough boules—the perfect vessels for chowder. This is a fantastic introduction to sourdough for beginners, and a great way to gain confidence in home baking.

Part 2: Two Chowder Options
You’ll choose between:

  • Classic Creamy Clam Chowder, made with fresh clams and homemade clam stock

  • Hearty Corn Chowder, made from scratch using fresh corn cobs to build a flavorful base

Finally, you’ll learn how to carve and serve your boules as bread bowls, then enjoy your meal with your fellow classmates—topped off with a FABulous sweet treat surprise.

You will leave class with a sourdough starter to start baking sourdough home!

This is a perfect Date Night or Friend’s Night Out as you can BYOB! (Please drink responsibly!)

This class is suitable for the following Dynamic Duo* types:

YES: Parent/Grandparent & Child

YES: Couples

YES: Friends (you will share all equipment/ingredients for 1 recipe/batch…we let you rock, paper, scissors if the recipe doesn’t divide equally.)

*What is a Dynamic Duo? It’s basically two buddies sharing the same workstation at no extra charge. You share all equipment and ingredients for a single batch of whatever we’re making that day. (Don’t worry, we won’t stick you with some random stranger- if you want to fly solo, you’ll have the station (and all the yummy food) all to yourself!) For Chef Nights you will always have enough for two and generally some leftovers to bring home.

We provide aprons, recipes, all ingredients, supplies, and tools required for use during each class. Best of all you get to take home whatever tasty treats you make - we provide all boxes/packaging.

Please wear comfortable shoes (stools will be provided) and have long hair tied back. For the comfort of all our students and staff, we ask that you refrain from wearing strong perfume or cologne. You may wish to bring a cardigan or sweater as the kitchen is kept at 68F.
